Skyrim Dragon Locations (All Dragon Lairs)

Every dragon lair in Skyrim — Ancient's Ascent, Bonestrewn Crest, Shearpoint, Mount Anthor and more — each a word-wall and guaranteed dragon site, shown on the interactive map.

Beyond the dragons that ambush you on the roads, Skyrim has a set of fixed dragon lairs — each a Word Wall site guarded by a resident dragon. They're the best places to learn Dragon Shouts and farm dragon souls, bones and scales. Here's every one.

What you'll find at each lair

  • A Word Wall that teaches a word of a Dragon Shout — browse what each unlocks on the shouts list.
  • A resident dragon (once the main quest awakens them), which respawns over time — so each lair is a renewable source of dragon souls and crafting materials.
  • Dragon bones and scales for Dragonbone and Dragonscale crafting at the forge.

Notes & tips

  • Each Word Wall word still needs a dragon soul to unlock for use. Kill the lair's dragon and absorb its soul, then the word becomes castable.
  • Out of dragon souls? You can refill them via the console — see the unlock dragon shouts guide for player.modav dragonsouls and related commands.
  • Lairs like Shearpoint and Northwind Summit also feature named bosses or dragon priests, so come prepared for more than just the dragon.

Frequently asked questions

How many dragon lairs are in Skyrim?

There are ten fixed dragon lairs scattered across the map — Ancient's Ascent, Autumnwatch Tower, Bonestrewn Crest, Dragontooth Crater, Eldersblood Peak, Lost Tongue Overlook, Mount Anthor, Northwind Summit, Shearpoint and Skyborn Altar. Each is built around a Word Wall and has a resident dragon.

Do dragons respawn at these lairs?

Yes. After the main quest awakens the dragons, the resident dragon at each lair respawns over time, so the lairs are a reliable place to farm dragon souls and scales once the original has been killed.

Why visit dragon lairs?

Each lair holds a Word Wall that teaches a word of a Dragon Shout, plus a guaranteed dragon fight for souls, bones and scales. They're the best spots to learn shouts and gather dragon crafting materials.
