Alchemy is Skyrim's potion-and-poison crafting skill, and it runs on one simple rule: mix two ingredients that share an effect and you brew a potion of that effect. This guide covers exactly how that works, how to level Alchemy quickly, and how to use our tools to find any recipe.
How alchemy works
- Every ingredient carries four hidden effects.
- Mixing two or more ingredients that share an effect brews that effect into the result. A beneficial effect makes a potion; a harmful one makes a poison.
- You can only deliberately brew an effect after you've discovered it on both ingredients — by eating them or by experimenting at the lab.
- If two ingredients share several effects, all the matching effects are brewed into the same potion at once.
Using the recipe finder
Rather than memorizing effects, use our alchemy recipe finder: pick the effect you want — say Restore Health — and it lists every ingredient that carries it, so any two from the list will brew that potion. Browse all effects on the effect list and all ingredients on the ingredient list.
Leveling Alchemy fast
- You earn Alchemy XP every time you brew, scaled by the potion's value — so brewing higher-value potions levels you faster.
- Buy out the alchemy ingredients from town apothecaries (Arcadia in Whiterun is a good start), brew in bulk, then sell the potions back for gold and more XP.
- The Alchemist perk (and Physician, Benefactor, Poisoner) make potions stronger; the Alchemist perk's rank is the biggest single boost to potion magnitude.
Notes & tips
- Want to skip foraging? Open the console with the tilde key (
~) — see the opening the console guide — and useplayer.additem <ID> <Amount>to spawn any ingredient. (This disables achievements for the session.) - For ready-made recipes, see our guides on the health potion and the Fortify Enchanting potion.
- Fortify Restoration and the crafting loop let dedicated alchemists push potion magnitude far beyond normal — handy once your skill is high.
Frequently asked questions
How does alchemy work in Skyrim?
Every ingredient has four hidden alchemical effects. When two or more ingredients you mix at an alchemy lab share an effect, that effect is brewed into a potion (if beneficial) or a poison (if harmful). The trick is knowing which ingredients share the effect you want.
How do I level Alchemy fast in Skyrim?
You gain Alchemy XP every time you brew, and more for higher-value potions. Brewing many Restore Health potions (Blue Mountain Flower + Wheat) or high-value combos like Giant's Toe + Wheat + Blue Mountain Flower levels Alchemy quickly. Buying out vendor ingredients and brewing in bulk is the standard method.
How do I discover an ingredient's effects?
Eat an ingredient to reveal its first effect, or brew with it to reveal effects through experimentation. Higher Alchemy perks reveal more effects at once. Once an effect is discovered on two ingredients, you can brew it deliberately.
Do potions and poisons use the same system?
Yes. Matching a beneficial effect makes a potion you drink; matching a harmful effect (like Damage Health) makes a poison you apply to a weapon. The crafting step at the alchemy lab is identical either way.
