How to Cure Vampirism in Skyrim

Cure full vampirism by finding Falion in Morthal and filling a Black Soul Gem, or clear early Sanguinare Vampiris at a shrine — plus the console command fix.

Tired of burning in sunlight and being attacked in town? Full vampirism in Skyrim is cured by a ritual with Falion in Morthal. If you've only just caught the disease and haven't turned yet, the fix is much simpler. Here's both. (To go the other way, see how to become a vampire.)

Early stage: cure it like any disease

If you still have the disease Sanguinare Vampiris in your active effects — meaning you caught it but the three days haven't passed — you can clear it for free:

  • Pray at any shrine of the Nine Divines, or
  • Drink a Cure Disease potion — see the cure disease guide.

Once you're a full vampire, neither works — you'll need Falion's ritual below.

Full vampire: Falion's ritual

  1. Travel to Morthal and speak to Falion, a mage who walks between his house and the town. He offers to cure your vampirism.
  2. He asks for a filled Black Soul Gem. Get an empty Black Soul Gem (buy one from Falion or a court wizard), cast Soul Trap on a humanoid and kill them to fill it.
  3. Return to Falion and meet him at the summoning stones just outside Morthal. Wait until dawn and he performs the ritual.
  4. You're cured and human again — sunlight is safe once more.

Note: you can become a vampire again later, so cure freely. If you have the Dawnguard add-on and were a Vampire Lord, this ritual also reverts that.

Console command cure

On PC the fastest fix is to reset your race. Open the console and use player.setrace with your normal race — for example player.setrace NordRace — which strips the vampire form. You can also remove leftover vampire abilities with player.removespell. Spawning/altering via the console disables achievements for that save.

Frequently asked questions

How do you cure vampirism in Skyrim?

Talk to Falion in Morthal, who offers a cure ritual. He sends you to fill a Black Soul Gem (trap a humanoid's soul in an empty Black Soul Gem), then meet him at the summoning stones outside Morthal at dawn to perform the ritual that turns you human again.

Where do I get a Black Soul Gem to cure vampirism?

Buy an empty Black Soul Gem from Falion himself or from court wizards, or find one in dungeons. Fill it by casting Soul Trap on a human, elf, orc or other humanoid and killing them while the spell is active.

Can I cure early-stage vampirism at a shrine?

Only before you fully turn. While you still have the disease Sanguinare Vampiris (within the first three days), praying at any shrine of the Divines or drinking a Cure Disease potion clears it. Once you're a full vampire, a shrine no longer works — you need Falion's ritual.

Is there a console command to cure vampirism?

Yes. On PC, player.setrace back to your normal race (e.g. player.setrace NordRace) removes the vampire form, and you can clear the vampire spells with player.removespell. Console commands disable achievements for that save.
