How Smithing XP Works
In Skyrim, crafting any item at a forge or Skyforge gives you Smithing experience equal to the item's base gold value. A more valuable item gives more experience per craft — a Daedric Sword (1,250 gold) gives 125× more XP per craft than an Iron Dagger (10 gold). The catch is that Daedric materials are scarce and expensive, so cheaper items like Iron Daggers or Leather Bracers are often better for grinding.
Fastest Ways to Level Smithing
Iron Daggers (10 XP each) — cheapest to mass-produce; iron ingots and leather strips are easy to buy in bulk from blacksmiths. Takes around 485 daggers to go from 15 to 100.
Leather Bracers (25 XP each) — 2.5× more efficient per craft than iron daggers. One leather and two leather strips per bracer. Around 195 bracers for 15→100.
Gold Rings — if you have access to gold ingots, rings give 75 XP each. Around 65 rings from 15 to 100, but gold ingots are pricier to farm.
Smithing XP Formula
XP gained per craft = item's base gold value. XP required to advance from skill level N to N+1 = N. So going from level 50 to 51 costs 50 XP — meaning you need 5 Leather Bracers or 1 Ebony Sword (value 975) to do it.
